ISLAMABAD, Feb 21 ( Diplomatic Star): Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi spoke on the phone with his German counterpart Annalina Beerbok in which the two leaders discussed developing situation in Ukraine and bilateral relations as well as regional issues.
Tensions between Russia and the West have risen sharply in recent weeks, with the United States warning that Russia could invade Ukraine at any time.
The United States and other Western nations say Russia has amassed more than 1.5 million troops on Ukraine’s borders and is ready for a full-scale offensive.
Russia has repeatedly denied the allegations in a statement issued Friday stating “Similar, baseless allegations concerning Russia’s intelligence have been made more than once.
France announced today that Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Joe Biden have agreed to hold a summit, but only if Russia does not invade Ukraine.
According to a statement issued by the Foreign Office, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Analina Beerbock also discussed the current situation in Afghanistan after the formation of the Taliban government.
Discussing Afghanistan, the Foreign Office reiterated its commitment to support Pakistan’s efforts in the international community’s efforts for peace and stability in the war-torn country, the Foreign Office said.
In this regard, it was further said that Shah Mehmood Qureshi also highlighted the role of Pakistan in the process of withdrawal from Afghanistan and told Bearbook that Pakistan has so far facilitated safe evacuation of more than 90,000 people from Afghanistan.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that there was an urgent need to stop the humanitarian crisis and economic crisis in Afghanistan because if it was not addressed, it would have serious negative effects.
Shah Mehmood Qureshi apprised his German counterpart of serious human rights violations by India after the illegal, unilateral action of 5 August 2019.
The Foreign Office statement added that the German Foreign Minister appreciated Pakistan’s assistance in withdrawing from Afghanistan and hoped for its continued support in this regard.

According to the Foreign Office, Shah Mehmood Qureshi congratulated Beerbok on his recent assumption of office and invited him to visit Pakistan soon.
Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that his visit would be helpful in preparing for the visit of Prime Minister Imran Khan to Germany.
In this regard, the statement further said that the two Foreign Ministers expressed satisfaction over the nature of bilateral relations between Pakistan and Germany and pledged to further enhance them.
In 2021, the two countries celebrated the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, according to a statement from the Foreign Office.
